Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about it TPN.
TPN stands for Total Parenteral Nutrition. What does that mean? Most of us get our nutrition through the digestive tract, or the “enteral” route. Thus, “parenteral” means that a route other than the digestive tract is used to gain nutrition. TPN is for patients who can’t get nutrition through their digestive tract.
TPN is now being given to Amos through his port-a-cath and goes directly into his blood stream.
Amos has lost 40lbs in the past two months and has such trouble with his digestive tract. For this reason TPN has become essential for him to survive.
The TPN formula he started today contains all of the essential nutrients a body needs to be healthy. This includes proteins, carbohydrates, fats, electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals. This leads to optimal nutrition and a better chance of restoring health.
The TPN formula is monitored and can be adjusted as necessary based on lab markers and the progress of his cancer.
The TPN itself comes in a 2-3 liter bag, and most patients infuse one bag per day. The bag itself is connected to a portable infusion pump that has been pre-programmed to deliver the TPN over a specified amount of time.
Our home health care company – Ageis will be monitoring his TPN and we love them. We are so glad his doctor is using a company we were already familiar with.
All therapies come with risk, and TPN is no different. Caution must be taken to ensure that the PICC line and insertion site remain clean and free of infection. Glucose abnormalities and liver dysfunction can also be a concern. Patients on long-term TPN may be at risk for gall bladder inflammation and refeeding syndrome. There are also issues that can arise when the digestive tract is not being used for long periods of time, so hopefully care will be taken to avoid these complications for Amos.
I think I worry more when I am away from my sweetheart so I wanted to learn all I could about this today.
We made it to CVX Live and are having an amazing time already. Everyone has been so kind to us and it’s strange for the YouTube stars Evie adores to now know who she is and already feel connected to her because of America’s Got Talent.
Peter Hollens approached her tonight with a huge hug and a sincere concern for her and our whole family. He was nearly in tears when he explained how his own father had passed away from cancer. We appreciated his genuine care for us tonight as well as the J House Vlogs, Wilky Ways and many others.
Evie was so excited to see that her booth was in between two family vloggers who both have babies. She loves babies.
We are having tons of fun with the Mortensens and Emmett. Between him and Kirra, we are kept constantly entertained.
We got up early to go to a favorite place. Josh wanted to do baptisms at the temple rather than go to Lagoon and he convinced Evie to come too. It was a beautiful morning.
She had some fans approach her at the restaurant where we had lunch today and they were in tears. Complete strangers have such strong feelings for Amos and truly want him to pull through this. It seems like the whole world is rooting for him and can’t wait to see him beat this thing. Go Team Amos!!
